I've always wanted to go to Haiti. In December 2009, I was telling my mother about my wish to go there and visit my family, considering that I have so many aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of my family that I've never had the chance to meet.
My mother's response wasn't too enthusiastic: she said that with all the kidnapping stories we hear about, she wouldn't let me go. Wouldn't let me go? Come on, now! Her 'no' was a no-nonsense, don't-test-me-child, this-discussion-is-over kind of 'no'. She tried to make me understand that a pretty girl like me would get snatched up by a kidnapper in a jiffy, and I retorted that I'll just uglify myself before I get off the plane; my sister and I had to chuckle at that one. Suffice it to say, my mom did put an end to that discussion fairly quickly resumed cooking Christmas dinner.
Three weeks later, on January 12th 2010, my plan to visit my loved ones in Haiti were deferred.
I still long to go there and discover the backdrop of my parents' colourful anecdotes. Even though many of the places mentioned in their stories have been ravaged by the earthquake, I know, from the stories of my close ones and the picture they've provided, that Haiti's beauty shines through at all times. When the dust and rubble is swept off, its intrinsic value lives on. It's great to see that renowned designers like Donna Karan are able to see what native Haitians have been witnessing their whole lives during this photoshoot in Jacmel.
